Republican allies of President-elect Donald Trump are bidding in the US Congress for the purchase of Greenland by circulating a project on the subject.
President-elect Donald Trump's Republican allies in the House of Representatives are trying to drum up support for a bill authorizing talks to the purchase of greenlandaccording to a copy distributed to cosponsors on Monday.
The bill is called the “Make Greenland Great Again Act,” reported the offices of Republican Representatives Andy Ogles, who is leading the project, and Diana Harshbarger.
As of Monday morning, the project had 10 cosponsors.
Trump says he wants Greenland to be part of the United States and has not ruled out using military or economic power to persuade Denmark to hand it over to him.
Republicans won narrow majorities in the House and Senate in the Nov. 5 elections.
The bill, if passed, will allow the president to enter into negotiations with Denmark on January 20, when Trump takes office.
“Congress hereby authorizes the President, effective at 12:01 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on January 20, 2025, to attempt to enter into negotiations with the Kingdom of Denmark to secure the acquisition of Greenland by the United States.” United,” the draft bill says.
“No later than 5 calendar days after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark regarding the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, the President will transmit to the appropriate committees of Congress the agreement, including all related materials and annexes,” duck.
Greenland has been controlled by Denmark for centuries, previously as a colony and now as a semi-sovereign territory under the Danish kingdom. It is subject to the Danish Constitution, meaning that any change to its legal status would require a constitutional amendment.
Prime Minister Mute Egede, who has intensified his campaign for independence, has repeatedly stated that the island is not for sale and that it is up to its inhabitants to decide its future.
