The presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, dialogue about the end of the conflict in Ukraine, according to the press the US president.
President Donald Trump said he spoke by phone with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, about the end of the war in Ukraine, reported the New York Post, the first direct conversation known between Putin and an American president since the beginning of 2022.
Trump, who has promised to put an end to war in Ukraine but has not yet exposed in public how he will, said last week that the war was a bloodbath and that his team had had “some very good conversations.”
In an interview aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump told the New York Post that “better not to say it,” when he was asked how many times he and Putin had spoken.
“He (Putin) wants people to stop dying,” Trump told New York Post. The White House did not respond to a request for comments.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the state news agency Tass that “many different communications are emerging.”
“These communications are carried out through different channels,” Peskov said when Tass asked him to directly comment on the New York Post report. “I can personally know something, ignore something. Therefore, in this case, I cannot confirm or deny it.”
Reuters reported in November that Putin is open to discuss a peace agreement with Trump, but rules out making important territorial concessions and insists that kyiv leaves his ambitions to enter NATO.
The Kremlin has repeatedly requested caution against speculation about contacts with the Trump team around a possible peace agreement.
Leonid Slutsky, head of the International Affairs Commission of the Russian Parliament, was summoned on Thursday by the State News Agency RIA saying that the preparations for this meeting were in “an advanced phase” and that it could take place in February or March.
Putin spoke for the last time with the former US president Joe Biden in February 2022, shortly before Putin ordered the entry of thousands of troops in Ukraine.
