Conservative activist Ed Martin, who spread the unfounded statements of Donald Trump about fraud in the 2020 elections and defended those responsible for the Assault on the Federal Capitol of January 6, 2021was nominated by the president on Monday to permanently occupy the position of federal prosecutor in Washington.
Martin had been performing as a federal prosecutor for the Columbia district interim since Republican Trump assumed his second term on January 20. His appointment must be confirmed by the Senate.
“Since the inauguration, Ed has been doing a great job as an interim federal prosecutor, fighting tirelessly to restore law and order, and make the capital of our nation safe and beautiful again,” Trump wrote on his platform Social truth. “He will do the job.”
As director of the Human Rights Office of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Luis, Martin supervised legal clinics for low -income residents and, for two decades before becoming a federal prosecutor, he was in charge of his own legal office and was an active member of Republican policy, even as president of the Missouri Republican Party.
As an interim federal prosecutor, Martin supervised the dismissal of hundreds of cases related to the attacks on January 6, after Trump pardoned, commuted sentences or promised to discard the cases of the accused.
He also ordered an internal review of the use of charges for serious crimes by prosecutors against hundreds of fuss of the Capitol and directed employees to deliver files, emails and other documents.
As Federal Prosecutor, Martin has also defended the work of the Department of Government Efficiency of Elon Musk, stating that prosecutors “will pursue any legal action against anyone who hinders” the group's work.
