“The Monkey” film criticism: Dead drummed by the toy monastery

The cartoon -like parable about our mortality can also be seen as a comedic counterpart to “Longlegs”.

Osgood Perkins, son of “Psycho” star Anthony, remains loyal to the horror genre even after the sensationally good “Longlegs” and, as a template for his new work, chooses the short story of another master of horror-Stephen King. This time, however, you will look for long legs or Nicolas Cage, since the title -giving Monkey is a small toy monkey. Nevertheless, it does not let it be fun, but ensures that a lot of blood flows over the canvas.

The monkey keeps returning

The twin couple Hal and Bill (the young Christian Convery in a double role) already had evil experiences in childhood with the toy discovered in the attic, because the bizarre deaths increased in their immediate vicinity. Therefore, they made the monkeys disappear again and continued to live. In the meantime they have grown up (and are embodied by a doubled Theo James). They had no contact with each other for years, but the big dying around them begins again. The suspicion that the evil toy figure will soon be confirmed and with the relentless monkey, a new duel is imminent that is impaired by family disagreements.

Shrill figures and crazy types of death

“The Monkey” is actually a cartoon -like parabola on all of our mortality – an inevitable end, which we do not know when it meets us; And if you want to bother fate into the craft, you will experience a nasty surprise, because providing providence does not understand in this regard, but you like to allow yourself one. So you could summarize the “message” of this film, and Perkins cannot offer enough black humor when transmitting them.

Not only are the types of death staged and exaggerated, but also all figures come like parodies of themselves – regardless of whether an intrusive housing broker with a long -term smile or a real young priest who is known to the face, who is his dead sermon with the F -Word begins. Tatiana Maslany from “Orphan Black” plays a cool mother who would have liked to have granted a longer appearance, Elijah Wood completes an even shorter guest appearance, and the director himself is also honoring himself as a weird uncle – but how most other people survive – not long because a bizarre hunting accident suffers him.

At the same time, the film looks like a comedic counterpart to the very serious “Longlegs”. Once again, someone swings up with life and death or at least tries it. So if you like the gallows humor and are not afraid to be hit in front of flying parts of the body, you can only feel in good hands with “The Monkey”.
