Super Charlie movie review

The writer Camilla Läckberg is repeatedly called “Agatha Christie Sweden” in her home country. In this country, too, it is best known for its atmospherically dense crime novels, which play in the picturesque fishing village of Fjällbacka on the Swedish west coast. Six of these novels have already been filmed for television and broadcast in Germany under the series title “Camilla Läckberg – Murder in Fjällbacka”.

However, it is less known that Camilla Läckberg, together with the illustrator Millis Sarri, also wrote a comic book series for children who has not yet been translated into German: “Super Charlie“, A humorous story around the title -giving baby with superhuman forces. Now the fabric for the cinema has been filmed – as a fast -paced, exciting, exciting and at the same time mighty animation fun for the whole family.

With the arrival of Charlie, a lot changes for the big brother will – albeit very differently than you would expect …

Will lives in a Swedish city with his parents and his serious-pubescent sister. Everything is still in the green, but that changes when his little brother is born. Nobody has time, neither his father, a police officer, nor his mother, a writer. Everyone only takes care of the cute little snot spoon – and will, which suddenly feel very lonely, can see where he stays. And in the truest sense of the word, because he even has to clear his room for Charlie.

But one day he discovers that the newborn brother he prefers to sell, give away or shoot the moon would have very special forces. Charlie masters telekinesis and laser rays, is super strong and fast. With his cute Patsche hands, he lets trucks fly through the area. In addition, Charlie can speak with a few weeks. The clever will understands that he could use Charlie's skills great for himself to drive his own career as a superhero. But then the brothers get in the middle of the competition for second super villains …

Loving and fast -paced

One should not forget: Despite his superpowers, Charlie still remains a little baby who regularly needs his bottle and begins to scream in the most inappropriate moment. It is also really cute as long as it is not provoked. Some things, especially the parodist charm and the warm-hearted message from family coexistence, remind you of the US hit “Boss Baby” or Bruno Bozzetto's legendary (and unfortunately almost forgotten) superhero film “VIP-My brother, The Supermann ”(1968). The action comedy, which is as colorful as well as well-timed action comedy, will certainly not revolutionize the animated film, but in the best Scandinavian tradition, it combines craftsmanship with a family-compatible action that is also well thought out and exciting.

Jon Holmberg recently staged the Netflix comedy “A very bad day” and has previously made a name for himself as a director and author of children's films. He also wrote the imaginative script for “Super Charlie” together with Camilla Läckberg. Incidentally, it is worth taking a close look and listening, because both the dialogues and the individual figures are so lovingly, funny and detailed that not only children but also adults can enjoy their fun in the fun action.

Will and his baby brother have to work together to switch off two (!) Super villains.

The structure is a nice homage to superhero films. As it should be, one will start with a Origin story Explained how Charlie comes to his supernatural forces at all: poison green comet dust is to blame this time, and of course he shouldn't hit Willes's newborn brother, but was actually intended for the super villain Anton, who unfortunately went away empty during the last flight of the comet 50 years ago.

Incidentally, Anton is spoken by Beni Weber in the German dubbing version, who became known for his moderations and the “Die Beni Challenge” series on the Disney Channel, which means that at least for the very young audience himself, he is almost mutated into a superhero.

Conclusion: The nicely animated, brightly cheeky-colorful family comedy can be understood as a homage as well as as a parody on relevant superhero films. “Super Charlie” combines tangible cute and a lot of momentum with an adventurous act that lives from many good ideas and countless film quotes.
