Rhyme & Reason gives hip-hop its props

“”Rhyme & Reason,” the new documentary movie about hip-hop from Miramax Films, lets us know the whens, wheres, and hows of hip-hop.
The movie is the definition of keeping it real. Legend Kurtis Blow and rap pioneers Dr. Dre and Ice-T spoke of where hip-hop originated, how it became rap and how rap became gangster rap. The late Tupac talks about crime in the black community. Chuck D talks about how rap is an international, billion-dollar business that’s still not controlled by the artists. Rap artists Biz Markie, Notorious B.I.G., KRS-One, Nas, Method Man, The Pharcyde, Bustah Rhymes—they’re all in the house, talking about how they feel, what rap means to them, and highlighting rap’s historical moments. With all the people out there that dis rap, it’s nice to see some of the legends getting their props.
Rhyme & Reason doesn’t just talk about hip-hop from the east or west or the men in hip-hop. It honors the successes of women in hip-hop, artists like Salt-N-Pepa, Lauryn Hill and Da Brat. Lauryn Hill talks about the role of women in what can be seen as a business that puts women down.
When it comes down to it, the movie is coming true and just keeping it real.”
