The province of Ontario has begun to apply a 25 % increase to the electricity for the US in response to the commercial war of President Donald Trump.
The Prime Minister of Ontario, the ruler of the most populous province in Canada, announced that from Monday his province will charge 25 % more for electricity to 1.5 million Americans in response to The tariffs of US President Donald Trump.
Ontario supplies electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan.
“I will not hesitate to increase this position. If the United States scale, I will not hesitate to cut the electricity completely, ”said Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford, at a press conference in Toronto.
“Believe me when I say I don't want to do this. I feel terrible for the American people, who did not start this commercial war. It is a single person responsible, is President Trump. ”
Ford has said that the Ontario tariff will remain in place despite the postponement of a Trump month, adding that a month pause means nothing more than more uncertainty. Quebec is also considering taking similar measures with electricity exports to the United States.
The Ford office indicated that the new market rules require that any generator that sells electricity to the United States to add a 25 % surcharge to that country. The Ontario government hopes that it generates income of 300,000 Canadian dollars ($ 208,000) at 400,000 Canadian dollars ($ 277,000) per day, “that will be used to support workers, families and companies of Ontario.”
The new surcharge adds to the initial retaliation tariffs of the Federal Government worth 30,000 million Canadian dollars (21,000 million dollars) that have been applied to items such as American orange juice, peanut butter, coffee, appliances, footwear, cosmetics, motorcycles and certain pulp and paper products.
