United States airports recorded a record of more than 3 million travelers in a single day; this, after completing the Thanksgiving holiday celebrated on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
The number of people returning home after the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States was a record on Sunday: more than 3 million registered at airports.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported Monday that it served 3.09 million travelers, surpassing the previous record by approximately 74,000. That mark was set on July 7, also a Sunday after a holiday.
Hundreds of thousands of travelers were delayed or had their flights cancelled. Airlines canceled about 120 flights in the United States — not a particularly high number — and more than 6,800 flights were delayed, according to FlightAware.
The highest numbers of delays were recorded at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
The TSA had predicted that air traffic during Thanksgiving week would increase 6% compared to the same days last year, following the 2024 pattern.
