Mexico intensifies contacts with the USA by tariffs; Security Cabinet will meet with Secretary Rubio

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that members of her government will travel to Washington to meet Thursday with the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. He informed that the negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement reviews will be advanced.

The security cabinet of the Mexican government will meet Thursday in Washington with the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Wednesday.

The journey of the Mexican delegation is produced in a context of more bilateral contacts to avoid the imminent imposition of 25 % tariffs announced by the president Donald Trump, who would take effect on March 4.

This period was set after negotiations between Sheinbaum and Trump to pause the application of rates, which also include Canada, conditioned to better results by these neighboring governments in the fight against drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, and against illegal immigration.

“They have been working in recent days for the communication between the United States and Mexico to seek to close the coordination agreement in the framework of our sovereignty,” said the president on the security cabinet of her administration.

Sheinbaum explained that, with the exception of the Secretary of the Interior (Interior), the Delegation will be the head of Security, Omar García; of foreign relations, Juan Ramón de la Fuente; Marina, Raymundo Morales; and defense, Ricardo Trevilla; In addition to the attorney general, Alejandro Gertz.

The contacts between authorities of the two countries have intensified during the week, said the president, who explained that a meeting is also scheduled between the Secretary of the Treasury of Mexico, Rogelio Ramírez of the O, with the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, but did not clarify whether it would be face -to -face or virtual.

Last week, Lutnick received the Mexican Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, to discuss Trump's tariff plan, rejected by the Government of Mexico, which he has warned with imposing mirror measures if concretized.

In addition, Sheinbaum said that, due to the negotiations open by Trump's tariff promise, the review of the North American Free Trade Agreement, in force since 2020 between Canada, the United States and Mexico, could be anticipated: “What is most likely that all that review is advanced.”
