“Monsters” blew us so much in 2010 that the film start editorial team even organized a Germany-wide preview series for the creature actioner: Despite a mini budget of $ 500,000, the independent production-not only in terms of special effects-even made most of the studio blockbuster effortlessly in the shade. This was mainly thanks to a man: Gareth Edwards not only responsible for the script, director and camera, but also created the numerous spectacular computer effects – with commercially available cutting programs instead of million doors special software. Following our demonstrations, the discussions with fans kept reaching the same point: According to “Monsters”, it is probably only a matter of time before Gareth Edwards takes over a “Jurassic Park” film!
Instead, Edwards continued with “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, while Colin Trevrov took the task of being responsible for the incredibly successful “Jurassic World” series-until he maneuvered them with “Jurassic World 3: A new age”: Pressing primeval giants into a global blockbuster saga based on James Bond's model was the previous low of the entire row. Despite the billion dollar sales at the box office, a course correction was inevitable – and at least that is the title “Jurassic World: The rebirth“Customized. Gareth Edwards was only available for this task – but probably that was probably the right way to return to the original strengths of the franchise.

Scarlett Johansson noticeably has a lot of fun in her role – and he also transfers to the audience.
Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) strives for a new cardiac medication with his pharmaceutical group-and thus after winning in trillion height. But for this he first needs blood samples from three very special creatures – the largest water acid, the largest air dinner and the largest country acid. The problem is only: 32 years after the return of the dinosaurs, most of them only live on islands near the equator – whose entry is strictly prohibited. The security expert Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) comes into play. For an impressive fee, she provides a team around the ship captain Duncan Kincaaid (Mahershala Ali), the arms expert Bobby Atwater (Ed Skrein) and the paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) together to get to the coveted plasma.
At the same time, the divorced father Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) with his daughters Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda) as well as his hopeful-not-son-in-law Xavier (David Iacono) on the ocean, which is interrupted by a acidic attack. While Pharma-Martin insists on continuing the mission, mercenary Zora decides to react to the emergency signal of the capsized family. But that is only the first of many unexpected obstacles-because not only the “usual” dinosaurs on the island, but also some genetic varieties that were bred here up to a snickers in the need to offer the lack of dinopark audience …
Back to the roots
With production costs of $ 432 million, “Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom” is second in the Wikipedia list of the most expensive films of all time-only “Star Wars 7: Awakening of Power” has another $ 15 million more devoured. In a direct comparison, the rumored budget of “only” $ 180 million for “Jurassic World: Return” has almost modest. But one should not forget that Gareth Edwards, with his science fiction epic “The Creator”, finally delivered some of the best-looking effects of all time for just $ 80 million. And indeed: with very few exceptions – such as a video -playing abseiling scene – “Jurassic World: The Return” looks absolutely great. Above all, the interaction of predominantly handmade for reasons as well as dinosaurs added by computer reminds much more of the “Jurassic Park” era of the nineties instead of the CGI giantomania of the previous “Jurassic World” trilogy.
Especially since Gareth Edwards also puts a U -turn when staging the Setpieces, because instead of pure destruction orgies, it is (finally) dealing with the most creative ideas as possible: Where Colin Trevreow recently put half cities in rubble and ash in order to tease any reaction out of the audience, Edwards is enough for a simple yellow rubber boat to get several potential icing settings To generate-right down to a T-Rex fleet trick that would live up to a David Copperfield himself. The scenes in the smoke or fog remain the most atmospheric – at the latest since the parachute jump from “Godzilla” a trademark of the director. This time, too, it only takes a few seconds for a D-Rex to sneak out of the reddish swaths to his long-term damn victim after a carelessly disposed of Snickers packaging.

The red smoke is now almost something like a trademark of director Gareth Edwards!
Speaking of D-REX: Even if it goes back to the roots in “Jurassic World: The Red Birth”, new generation of genetic engineering is not dispensed with. But honestly: the “final opponent” specially created for the film does not even look half as good (and intimidating) as the T-Rex, which in between for a high-speed game water purity hunt. The Bonsai dino Dolores, which Isabella drags around in her backpack, is far more charming: a tiny aquilops, obviously designed for the merchandise shelf, but also really cute. (And: Aquilops actually weren't greater than 60 centimeters.)
Anyway, Gareth Edwards has a lot of fun with such small throws-from the winking of sweets-producing placements (for the Snickers is far from the end!) To countless Easter Eggs, which refer back to earlier parts of the series: 32 years after the three-time Oscar-winning original, we are reminded again this time that “objects are closer than them than them appear”…
A fetch quest in feature film length
You know this especially from computer games, where you often get so -called fetch quests, for example to brow a potion before you have to collect the ingredients x, y and z. “Jurassic Park” original author David Koepp now makes no secret of the fact that the blood sample gimmick is only there to confront the figures with the largest dinosaurs from water, air and earth. But honestly, a “Jurassic” film doesn't need more plot either. On the other hand, it is really a shame how much potential the film leaves in the interpersonal: If you throw a family into such an action blockbuster, then of course, of course, in order to be able to offer an anchor in the audience. But mostly such figures are a bit annoying – and that is now no different in “the rebirth”, even if that is absolutely not due to the actors.
The cast is damn in a good mood through the bank. Above all, Scarlett Johansson (“The Phoenician Master Cancer”), a confessing mega fan in the series, you can tell her huge joy of being able to be part of the project. If she continues to sip her cornflakes, while her male fellow campaigners get herself back into her hair, you still take her absolute authority in the group – which is also due to her empathetic quick -wittedness. What great cabbage could have been there between Zora and Duncan? But breath cake: Instead, the mercenary with heart has to talk in wooden moral debates whether you should really leave the heart remedy to big pharma or not better make it available to the general public. Too bad.
Conclusion: “Jurassic World: The rebirth” lives up to his title! After the completely overwhelmed “Jurassic World: Dominion”, “Monsters” mastermind Gareth Edwards brings the series back into the right lane-with some of the best-staged setpieces in the entire series. For the purely human scenes, there are still clear deductions in the B-grade-especially in view of the terrific ensemble, led by the great Scarlett Johansson, there would definitely have been a lot more. Nevertheless, this seventh dino blockbuster has been the best part of the series since “Forgotten world“ – if not since the inaccessible original from 1993.
