“These days, what you wear is who you are. If you’re dressed well, people will treat you like a queen. And if you’re the one who makes the clothes, you’re a celebrity. When stars go to the Oscars, the main question they get is “Who made your dress?”
But how do you get started in this competitive world? Do designers just decide to make beautiful, outrageous clothes?
No, some designers decide to go to fashion colleges. And I got the chance to go to a award ceremony for the Fashion Institute of Design and Managment (FIDM). It was a totally different experience for me.
There were young designers there that were going to exhibit there work. But the interesting thing was that the students designed clothes from ready-to-wear to movie costumes. One student is actually already designing for Giorgio.
Fashion school isn’t just for making and designing clothes. The students have to learn the business angle of the fashion world. They have to learn how to sell their product and manage their money. They study all of the courses required at other colleges.”
