“Despicable Me 4”: Mega Minions get started

Here, Gru and a few new Superminions face off against a cockroach villain and unleash the usual gag mayhem.

We can finally live out our yellow addiction uninhibitedly again. A full seven years have passed since we last saw Gru and his chaotic little helpers in “Despicable Me 3” – in between there was at least “Minions – in search of the mini-boss” as a stopgap in 2022. The Minions are already superstars; If some of them also become superheroes, that is only a logical development.

But before the strength increases, a new adventure must first begin, although it looks as if ex-supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell again, of course) has finally become a harmless family man whose biggest challenge is changing diapers – which but luckily the Minions are quickly dispatched in pit stop style.

The previous three adopted daughters have now been joined by a baby boy and Gru is a very proud dad alongside his wife Lucy (with Kristen Wiig's original voice). But also a worried one and there is a good reason for this, because the cockroach-obsessed meanie Maxime Le Mal (spoken in very French by Will Ferrell) has threatened to kidnap Junior.

To prevent this, the entire family is quickly put into the witness protection program by the Anti-Crime League and, given new identities, quartered in a harmless suburban town. Everything goes smoothly there, but as soon as Gru and co arrive, even a game of tennis, a visit to the hairdresser or shopping at the supermarket can become a thrilling affair.

In between, Gru also experiences an involuntary return to his roots when he goes on a raid at his old school and takes on a very vicious mascot. When the doorbell finally rings and a grandma stands in front of it in a wheelchair, complete chaos breaks out anyway.

Who will protect us from the mega minions?

Despite all the joy at the crazy screen activity, one thing cannot be overlooked: “Despicable Me 4”, like all films in this series, actually breaks down into countless individual scenes, which are sometimes more and sometimes less plausibly held together by the overarching story arc. This time, however, it works much better than in the previous third part – there the Minions were a bit of a lost cause because the script didn't know what to do with them, but this time they are fully back in the game.

“Despicable Me 4”: This is the new supervillain

Five of the bustling yellow tiny creatures receive a treatment with a super serum and develop superminionic powers. This is how the Mega Minions are born: They look like a cross between the Fantastic Four and the X-Men. It's no wonder that they immediately embark on a superhero mission and save people in ways that shouldn't be possible.

Here, a gag fireworks display is set off that simply puts you in a good mood, and the cinemas can offer a “yellow-back guarantee” if you don't like it, because they know full well that no one will claim it.
