Canada responded to the tariffs arranged by the president of the USA, Donald Trump, with taxes similar to US imports.
Canada will impose 25 % tariffs on US imports worth 30,000 million Canadian dollars (about 20,720 million dollars) with immediate effect, said Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau on Tuesday.
Trudeau made the announcement a few hours after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, imposed 25 % tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
“There is absolutely no justification or need to apply these tariffs today,” said Trudeau, adding that Canada would challenge US measures in the World Trade Organization and through the commercial agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Trudeau said that his country will find new ways of cooperating with Mexico to deal with tariffs imposed by Trump.
If US tariffs persist, Canada will impose a 25 % tax on another 125,000 million Canadian dollars of US imports in 21 days, the prime minister added.
“Our tariffs will remain in force until the United States commercial action is withdrawn, and if US tariffs do not cease, we are in active and continuous discussions with regions and territories to search for several non -tariff measures,” Trudeau said.
To end the tariffs imposed on Tuesday, the White House wishes to see a decrease in the seizures of fentanil within the United States, not only on the north and south borders. Government officials point out that seizures last month in sites ranging from Louisiana to New Jersey were linked to foreign posters.
