In Greek mythology, the titans were a gods that always kept their low status in mind, but also watched over them. In the Japanese manga series “Attack on Titan”, on the other hand, there is war between different titans and enemy groups of people. For ten years, booklets and anime sequences of Aot appeared, as the epic is called in fan circles before the epic came to an end.
Now Yuichiro Hayashi has put together two of the last episodes of the TV series for a feature film, which his name “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack“All honor! Spectacular, spectacular and very bloody battles between titans and people determine the almost two and a half hours, which also means: If you are not very familiar with the mythology of Aot, you should have difficulty following what happened. But of course you can also simply sit back and enjoy the lustful excess that is opened to the grand finale.

“Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” provides an extra portion of visual power again!
People are no longer the most powerful creatures on earth. They have been fighting titans for a long time and have already delivered a number of epic battles. They had withdrawn behind high walls and enjoyed peace for decades, but then the titans attacked again and also killed the mother of Eren Yaeger. He then developed into a legendary fighter, who now takes the plan to trigger the “earth” that threatens to destroy all living things on earth.
His former friends Armin Arlert and Mikasa Ackerman are doing everything possible to prevent this – and bring together the different groups of the people who have to overcome their animosities in order to stand together against a larger enemy. But to win over the titans, Armin and Mikasa also have to face their old friend …
Famous fans
Allegedly, even Bruno Mars is said to be a fan of Aot and used the tragic basic mood of the series as inspiration for his song “The With A Smile”. Maybe that's just a pretty internet rumor, but one way or another, Aot is one of the most successful manga series of all time: Over the past few years, more than 140 million mangas of the series written and drawn by Hajime Isayama have been sold, the TV- Series brings it to over 90 episodes, even a stage adaptation was planned. Hollywood, of course, called on the scene like this: Warner Bros. secured the rights for a live action adaptation, in which “ES” director Andy Muschietti should direct. However, this announcement has been a few years ago, so the project seems to be on ice.
Fans of the series can now look forward to a special learning experience, because the grand finale of the series is a bombastic epic. Knowing the series, however, is almost a basic requirement, because for newcomers “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” could be about to feel like you would start with the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy directly at the final battle on the Pelennor , so that you really have no idea who is fighting against each other.

You have to know the series to understand who is fighting here, but not to enjoy the huge pictures.
The conditions of the characters are also roughly torn down in the film, but given the alienation between Eren on the one hand and Armin and Mikasa on the other hand, there are of course still many subtexts on the track. However, this does not matter too much, because the visual qualities of “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” would certainly also open up if the epic would be viewed without any language skills in the original Japanese version without a subtitle.
The first attack by the titans is epic: the human -like figures appear from the fog. They are giants without skin whose red muscles stand out. Always discreetly only shown up to the hip, which is why the question of whether oversized titans are also oversized, does not allow the titans to stamp into the first battle that still easily win people. But soon they already meet the rules of the escalation spiral to more impressive, mutated titans, which sometimes look like a gigantic wild animal, then again like a gigantic skeleton, through whose ribs the people on flight beings fly in rapid manner.
The bombast of “Transformers”, but with more heart
The images in these battle scenes are often so quick that the timely motivations of slow -motion appear only all the more impressive. You feel a little reminded of the epic battle scenes in Michael Bay's “Transformers” films, in which, in a similar way, conventional narrative cinema dissolved into a frenzy of pictures and tones that achieved almost impressionistic quality. But “Attack on Titan: The Last Attack” has more heart, with all the excessive excess in the shade of the struggle for the survival of mankind, also manages to tell an intimate story of grief, loss and friendship. A spectacular anime epic, especially, but not only for connoisseurs of the Aot world.
Conclusion: Quasi as a gift to fans of the long-standing manga and anime series “Attack on Titan”, the last two episodes were cut into an exuberant movie. Especially in terms of sound technology, they become neatly pimped again, they become a linen hiking experience of the particularly excessive manner.
