“The pressures of being a senior are now on. It’s hard being a senior. Every time you look around, there is some adult reminding you that in nine months, you’re going to be out on your own, and Mommy and Daddy aren’t going to be there to watch you. I feel as if I am standing at this big crossroads and I don’t know which path to choose.
There are so many opportunities out there for young people now that the choices are overwhelming. Unlike some of my peers I am not going to a four-year college, at least not right away. True, I have the few basics down pat. I know I want to go to a community college and then transfer on to a four year university, but what community college? Then when I finally make up my mind on where I want to go, what do I major in?
For a short period of time I had actually thought about being a police woman, but police officers seem to be getting a bad rep every time you turn on the television. Do I really want my parents to receive a phone call in the middle of the night saying that I have been injured in the line of duty or—even worse—killed?
Maybe I could be a counselor
I have always had a knack for giving good advice and helping others who have found themselves in sticky situations. And the plus about this is that I can get a Psychology degree in two years, but do I really want to sit around with a bunch of suicidal, depressed, sociopathic individuals or the latest unemployed actor who is angry about losing out his part in the newest action flick because he has a pot belly? No, thank you. So what is a girl to do?
When we go to college our main purpose is to get an education so we can get a job that will pay us more than five dollars an hour. This seems to be the next problem. Not only do I have to find something to major in, but I preferably want to major in something that will give me financial stability, something where I don’t have to worry about if I am going to pay rent on time. So where does this leave me?
I guess I will never know until I start exploring my options more realistically and get the right information about jobs that might be of interest to me.”
