Snow White movie review

With “Snow White“In recent years,” The Amazing Spider-Man “director Marc Webb has come to the center of the cultural struggle several times. At first there was criticism of the occupation of Rachel Zegler because the Latina supposedly did not fit into a decent European fairytale forest of the 19th century (although this was already Americanized and kitsched by Walt Disney in 1937 – the apple pie served there is clearly an American Pie). Shortly afterwards, the even small “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage criticized the presentation of the dwarfs working together in a cave as “backward”. Those responsible took the accusation at least seriously enough to meet members of the small community – in this way negative clichés should be avoided as far as possible.

The premiere of the allegedly $ 250 million blockbusters in Los Angeles was finally held smaller than expected – probably also because of the opposing attitudes of the two leading actors in the Middle East conflict. Although these controversy did not stop the pro-Palestinian Rachel Zegler and the pro-Israeli Gal Gadot from the Oscar ceremony on stage together, but at the same time it no longer only led to protests from all sides (most recently at the Hollywood Walk of Fame to Gal Gadot). After the film, however, there is only one conclusion: a lot of noise for little! “Snow White” is completely okay as with its opulent equipment and the colorful costumes, no more okay, no more and no less …

The fact that Rachel Zegler is simply a hammer singer should not surprise anyone anymore.

Snow White (as a child: Emilia Faucher) is brought up by her parents as a kind princess. In their kingdom, the rulers are there for the people – and not the other way around. But then her mother dies and her father is missing after a trip to a neighboring empire. Instead, Schneewittchen's stepmother (Gal Gadot) takes over the scepter: the farmers become soldiers, and instead of greater, only greed counts. In addition, the evil queen is so devoured by jealousy that she demands the death of Snow White (now: Rachel Zegler) when her magical mirror opens up that she is no longer the most beautiful in the whole country.

However, the hunter (Ansu Kabia), commissioned with the insidious murder, simply does not bring about the heart of erasing Snow White. Instead, he enables her to escape into the dark forest, where all sorts of dangers are initially lurking until the princess finally meets an empty house in which she lies completely tired in a surprisingly small bed – and experienced seven surprises at once … while awakening …

Hei-Ho, Hei-Ho

When you see the seven dwarfs, you can briefly doubt. At first they remind a little of these AI-generated pictures on social media, which should show how Cartoon figures like Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin would probably look like real people. But that quickly gets back on: thanks to the shimmering diamond veins, a short trip to her mine proves to be visually magnificent, while the new edition of your work song “Hei-Ho, Hei-Ho” ensures the first small earworm-and especially the interaction between Schneewittchen and the shy Seppl (voice in the original: Andrew Barth Feldman) even honestly.

Anyway, the first half, which remains very close to the 1937 role model, is a pretty round thing: “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler smashes her powerful power ballads, as if she wanted to bring herself into play for a possible musical crossover with the “Wicked”-Dive Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The equipment of fairytale lock and dwarf house is also beyond any doubt-especially the iconic apple topic of the original fairy tale is consistently carried out in the design. In addition, “Snow White” (after the Marvel productions have recently become gray and gray) is finally a really colorful Disney film-and only for this reason the costumes of the already three times Oscar-winning and 15-fold (!) Oscar-nominated Sandy Powell are full.

At the sight of the dwarfs you have to swallow briefly - but after a certain acclimatization, the look works amazingly well.

At the sight of the dwarfs you have to swallow briefly – but after a certain acclimatization, the look works amazingly well.

We even left another impetus of the headwind in the introduction to this article: When Rachel Zegler in 2022, in several interviews, said the criticism that the original film from 1937 was “extremely out of date”, this was partially interpreted as disrespect of a classic. But firstly, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is a (trick) technical milestone that was rightly considered with seven miniature oscars for Walt Disney-but nowadays he will hardly make the leap in the top ten of the best Disney animation films. On the other hand, the dwarfs are still fun to this day, but a character drawing of the title “heroine” is-except for her longing for a prince loving-actually almost non-existent.

Consequently, the reinterpretation is no longer about waiting for a noble prince, but about Schneewittchen's realization that they can no longer remain passive and wait for (male) help, but has to take care of restoring the once kind and good kingdom-with the song “Princess Problems” as a catchy question of question. As Love Interest If a rebellious thief is put to the side of Robin Hood: However, newcomer Andrew Burnap (“The Front Room”) as Joseph is disappointing-and his gang even gets nothing to do at all, which is why she also doesn't care about the disappointingly didactic final confrontation between Snow White and the evil queen.

Conclusion: Fairy tale musical, which is protected with equipment and costumes, with an outstanding Rachel Zegler, in which the reason for the added action lines can be understood very well-but in the end they still only work to a limited extent.
