What to do if the police pull you over
Guidelines for what to do when the police pull you over.
“• Be polite and respectful (no arguing).
• Keep hands on the steering wheel.
• Don’t give any explanations, excuses or stories. It’s better to be silent.
• Don’t complain on the scene or tell the police they’re wrong and that you’ll file a complaint.
• Upon request, show them your driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance.
• Remember the name of the officer, or ask for a business card. Los Angeles police are required to give out business cards if asked.
• You don’t have to have your picture taken unless you are arrested and booked.
• If it looks like the police will arrest you, ask if you are under arrest and what the charges are.
• Your car can be searched if the police have probable cause. To protect yourself later, make it clear you do not consent to a search.
• If you’re given a ticket, sign it, otherwise you can be arrested. You can always fight the case in court later.
• If you’re suspected of drunk driving and refuse to take a blood, urine or breath test, your driver’s license may be suspended.
• If needed, ask to see a lawyer and later file a complaint with the police department’s internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.
