What is commission?

“Many sales jobs pay an hourly wage in addition to commission, which is usually some type of a percentage of the amount you sell.
In the department store I worked in, they had a complicated commission calculation. Every day I had a sales goal of selling around $1,125 worth of merchandise—and I needed to sell that much and more to earn commission.
If the percentage of the sum of my total sales for the week was higher than my hourly pay, then the difference of the two figures was my commission. For example, if I worked 35 hours at my hourly rate of $7 an hour, I would earn $245. If the eligible sales for the week was $5,000, my commission might be $300. Subtracting my hourly payment, my commission payment would then be $55.”
