“Scholarship Requirements

If you want to be able to practice, compete and get an athletic scholarship your first year in college, you should:

• Register with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse ($18 one-time fee)
• Graduate from high school
• Meet grade-point average and SAT or ACT test score requirements, depending on which division the college is in.
• Meet specific course requirements, depending on which division the college is in.
• The college you choose may have different or additional entry requirements—call and find out what they are.

For Division 1 schools:
Minimum test score requirements are linked on a sliding scale to your GPA. In other words, if you have a 2.5 GPA, your minimum passing score is 68 on the ACT or 820 combined on the SAT. If you have a 2.0 GPA, you have to get at least 86 on the ACT or 1010 combined on the SAT. The highest scores achieved on the sections of these tests may be combined to achieve the highest score.
Required core courses include at least four years English, two years math, two years social science, two years natural or physical science (including one lab course), one year of additional courses in English, math or natural or physical science and two additional courses in any of the above areas, or foreign language, computer science, philosophy or comparative religion.

For Division II schools:
Minimum test score requirements are 68 on the ACT or 820 combined on the SAT. The highest scores achieved on the sections of these tests may be combined to achieve the highest score.
Required core courses include at least three years English, two years math, two years social science, two years natural or physical science (including one lab course), two years of additional courses in English, math or natural or physical science and two additional courses in any of the above areas, or foreign language, computer science, philosophy or comparative religion.
