Learning About Hinduism (lesson plan)
Lesson plan to go with the article on Hinduism (May-June 1999).
“On pages 16-17, Ravi Janumpally shows us how hurtful stereotypes can be. One way to break down stereotypes is to learn about other cultures and understand the significance of rituals we may find strange. This activity will introduce students to Hindu words and customs.
Activity
Have your students read the story and explain what the following terms mean:
• bhindi
• shakti
• pujas
• Tum-a-ley
Discussion Questions
• Describe one of Ravi’s conflicts. How did he feel when he realized the problem? Do you think he solved it? Why or why not?
• What did Ravi mean when he said he was “invisible?”
• Describe a Hindu custom you would be willing to try and why.”
