How to get a summer job

“Teens, are you looking for a job? Do you know how to dress, appear, and act? Do you think it’s realistic to apply for a job as a teenager? Well if you aren’t sure about these questions, I think I can help. I went over to the Westside Pavilion and interviewed various managers of all kinds of stores ranging from Rampage to The Sweet Factory. They told me important tips in successfully applying for a job and what to look forward to. The following is what each recommended.

Rampage
Can teens work here? Teen applicants should be at least 18 and should have previous experience. Mostly seniors or older work here; there are a lot of older teens working here now. It is realistic for an older teen to work here.
What to do at the interview: Rampage is busy so teen applicants should schedule an appointment with the manager. Be professional! Dress according to the style of the store for the interview. Act energetic, talkative, really show an enthusiastic personality, and show that you’re serious and committed.
Salary: You start at $7/hour and later earn increases. A clothing discount is also offered.
Job duties: Teen employees will be responsible for selling, working at the cash register, customer service, and maintaining the store and the clothing. Employees work about 25-30 hours a week. Most teens work part-time.
Past problems: Rampage has had problems with teenagers flaking out, not being responsible, hopping around to other jobs and not being committed.

Bath & Body Works
Can teens work here? Bath & Body Works regularly hires teens, though there are no teens working here at the moment. It is realistic for teens to apply, but they should be at least 16, preferably older. They must be mature and trustworthy.
What to do at the interview: Be dressed and ready for work that day. Do not come with friends to the interview. Be energetic, don’t be afraid to speak. Ask for and talk to the manager. Try to be unique.
The first impression is extremely important so be prepared to answer questions on the spot, practice with parents, and try to be the best possible applicant.
Salary: Teen employees will be earning above minimum wage. Salaries vary with experience and are negotiable.
Hours: Usually a four-hour shift and 4-20 hours a week (20 hours is rare). Most teens apply for part-time jobs.
Job duties: Teens are required to sell, stock, work with the cash register—almost everything besides management.
Past problems: A bad experience with a teen was the result of miscommunication between the parent and the teen. They didn’t agree on when the teen was available to work.
Advice: Make sure you have time for the job.

Contempo
Can teens work there? Teens must be 16 or older; teens who are 16 have a chance.
What to do at the interview: Contempo wants employees to fit Contempo’s style and personality. You have to be trendy, young, with lots of personality. For the interview you should be professional in your attitude and attire. Do not come in ripped jeans no matter how nice and trendy the manager is. Be patient and wait for the manager to find some free time. Be patient and polite to the customers.
Job duties: Teen employees would be required to do almost everything besides management—cash register, customer service, selling.
Salary: Teens will all receive the same pay and increase over time. A clothing discount also is offered.
Hours: Teens are mainly applying for part-time jobs. Teens will be working 10 to 30 hours a week.
Past problems: Contempo has mainly had good experiences with the teens hired.

Limited
Can teens work there? Applicants must be 18 or older, have personality and be energetic. They should have experience and knowledge. Teens are hired seasonally (during the store’s busiest time, such as in December before Christmas). Limited wants to mold their employees into a career at Limited.
What to do at the interview: Dress professionally and according to the style and personality of the
store. Approach the manager politely and treat the application seriously. (Don’t crumple it in your pocket.)
Job duties: Teen employees will be responsible for sales, cash register, arranging merchandise, customer service.

Sweet Factory
Can teens work there? Applicants should be at least 16; typically employees range in age from 16 to 21. A 16-year-old applicant has less of a chance.
What to do at the interview: Be professional! Smile and be positive; do not be too relaxed in terms of attire or manner of speech with the manager no matter how relaxed he may seem.
Job duties: Teen employees stock candy, handle the cash register, and provide customer service.
Salary: Start at minimum wage. A candy discount is offered.
Hours: The hours are flexible hours, with less hours on holidays. In a regular week, an employee would work about 15 to 40 hours.”
