LA Youth Alumni - Class of 1997

Shashank Bengali
Whitney High School 1997, USC
LA Youth taught me that some of the best journalism can arise from difficult circumstances--rape, drugs, poverty, racism. LA Youth covered it all! Keep it up!
Shashank had summer internships with the Philadelphia Inquirer, San Jose Mercury News, Kansas City Star, Long Beach Press-Telegram. At USC, Shashank majored in broadcast journalism, French and political science and is executive producer for the Annenberg TV News, the campus Newscast. Shashank is trying to save money to travel after graduation and write a novel.

Deva KyleDeva A. Kyle, Monroe HS

Vassar College, majoring in sociology.

"LA Youth opened so many opportunities for me, from meeting great teens from across the city to challenging me to do my best. Every experience I have had with LA Youth has been a very positive and special one. My favorite memory was when Libby and I went to interview the owner of a nightclub for an article I was writing on teen clubs. We had to go during club hours which meant entering this nightclub with cameras and tape recorders at 10 o'clock on a Friday night. From that point on I truly felt like a journalist."

"LA Youth has affected almost all levels of my life. It's improved my writing, dedication, and levels of commitment, not only that it looks great on applications to have published articles."
