“”The power is real, the story is forever, the time is now.” Those are the words that sum up all that is “The Prince of Egypt,” DreamWorks’ first animated motion picture. The film retells the story of Moses, a man raised as a prince of Egypt but born of a Hebrew slave, and how he leads his people to freedom through the power of God. With stunning visual effects, breathtaking music, and a star-studded cast the story is brilliantly brought to life onto the silver screen.
It is the brilliant animation and visual effects that contribute the most to the film’s existence. The most powerful scene that I felt deserves recognition is the parting of the Red Sea, which looks so realistic because it appears three-dimensional, yet you realize it is animated. The burning bush was enhanced beautifully to give it a vibrant appearance and the immense Egyptian monuments being built by the Hebrew slaves stuck out as if you were coming upon them in the desert. All these scenes give the film an appearance of a painting coming to life with all its beauty. All together this film holds the most stunning animation that I have ever seen.
To add to the power and magnificence of the film is the mesmerizing music by Academy-award winning songwriter Stephen Schwartz and composer Hans Zimmer who bring to life the story with such emotion. The beginning song, “Deliver Us” quickly sets the mood for what the story is all about because the Hebrews are singing about going to the Promised Land. You see the suffering and you know this isn’t going to be a zany kid movie.
No other animated film has included such a star-studded cast as “The Prince of Egypt.” Noteworthy is Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance as both the singing and speaking voice of Tzipporah, Moses’ wife. Aside from being a good actress, she also has a beautiful voice. There is also Val Kilmer as the voice of Moses, giving the character a sense of dignity and tranquillity. Martin Short and Steve Martin also made a good combination of comics as the two magicians, Hotep and Huy. All at once this cast, along with others, bring to life the characters of this epic tale of heroism and splendor.
With all the power and brilliance that is captured by “The Prince of Egypt” it is a film worth watching time and time again. Hey, it may seem like a kid movie but this is not just for kids. It’s for anyone who enjoys a good epic story from the heart. Trust me, this film should not be missed.”
