What is a deviated septum?

Illustration by Seth Shamban, 17, North Hollywood HS

The drawing on the left shows a "deviated septum," in which the wall dividing the nostrils is bent, blocking the flow of air through the nose. Surgery can correct the problem by building a "healthy septum," (shown at right) through which air flows more easily.
