Veronica’s job-hunting tips

• Tell everyone you know that you’re looking. Your friends and family are your best contacts.
• Don’t be picky about the places you’re applying to. Be open to opportunities—later on you can always move on to something better.
• Be persistent and patient. You can never put in too many applications.
• Try the city-run parks and recreation centers in your area, or see if your school is hiring.
• Try the Internet. www.gotajob.com and www.snagajob.com are two places to start.
• Speak confidently and dress conservatively when you talk to employers. Hand your application directly to the manager and try to speak to him or her personally.
• Follow up within a week by phone or in person.
• In the meantime, you might consider other money-making strategies—dog walking, babysitting, running errands for neighbors, making bracelets, giving haircuts.
