Rousseau named Gail Garrett, an alum and former teacher at Locke and assistant principal at Leuzinger High in Lawndale, to replace Annie Webb, who was transferred in November.

The role of the school board
Seven elected board members, each representing a different geographical area, make policy decisions about the district and appoint the Superintendent.

The role of the Superintendent
Roy Romer, who was appointed in 2000, is in charge of the whole school district, with its 889,000 students, and 932 schools and centers. He delegates responsibilities to his 11 local superintendents.

There are 11 sub-districts within the district. Each local superintendent is in charge of the schools within his or her sub-district, and delegates responsibilities to each principal.
