What is the California Proficiency Exam?

The California High School Proficiency Exam provides an alternative diploma for those wanting to graduate early. The GED and the CHSPE are both legal equivalents of a high school diploma. One is just as good as the other. The only real difference is that the GED is a federal test—recognized nationally—which you must be at least 18 to take. The CHSPE is a state test—only recognized in the state of California—which you only need to be at least 16 to take.

Who may take the exam?

Anyone 16 years old and older can take the exam. Applicants must at least be enrolled in the second semester of tenth grade.

How to take the exam

You must register to take the exam and submit a $50 processing fee with the application. Registration forms may be located in your school’s guidance office. If not, ask school officials where the forms are. You can download registration forms from the testing center’s Web site at www.chspe.com.
