Duties
Founded the Youth News Service in 1988 and managed its growth from a small news bureau to a award-winning newspaper and website serving 350,000 readers.
–FINANCIAL: Established a solid financial base with support and in-kind donations from foundations, corporations, individuals and a board of directors.
–MANAGERIAL: Responsible for hiring and supervising staff, setting policy and all operations for the organization, including strategic planning, board development, financial and records management and physical plant.
–EDITORIAL: Developed a broad audience for L.A. Youth material through various media, including the website, the Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, the Heath Textbook Publishing Co., SIRS Database and other publications.
Other Experience
Teacher, 1975 – 1985
Taught elementary school students in Los Angeles area schools. Developed multicultural curriculum and was an innovator in early childhood education.
Editorial Assistant, 1966 – 1971
Was a teacher, writer and editor in the Watts Writers Workshop founded by noted author Budd Schulberg. Workshop participants published “For the Ashes—Voices of Watts” published by the New American Library.
