Beyond the Mall—Fall Arts Guide

Because so few teens participate in the cultural and artistic life of Los Angeles, L.A. Youth set out to tell youth all about the arts, culture and fun.

"Since this was a brand new project for us, we wanted to get input from all different kinds of people—youth, creative types, museum professionals—everybody," said Executive Director Donna Myrow, who developed the arts project.

A meeting was held in June 2001 and attended by L.A. Youth writers and editors, teachers, journalists, screenwriters, Web designers, staff from Los Angeles museums and L.A. Youth supporters.

"We were able to get a real cross-section of the city," said L.A. Youth board member David Rickley.

Participants discussed many barriers facing teens: poor access to transportation, no money, age limits. L.A. Youth coverage should stress activities that are fun, interactive, affordable and accessible, many agreed.

They brainstormed possible names for the section:
    • Get to know L.A.
    • No car, no cash, no problem
    • The places you’ll go
    • Betcha didn’t know …
    • "I’m bored. What do you want to do? I don’t know, what do you want to do?"

"Beyond the Mall" was the clear favorite.

Get out and ENJOY your city!!
