What started out as a volunteer opportunity for me at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center this summer has turned into inspiration. I see how the work I do there affects the lives of others and how much they appreciate it.

I’ve met these people at the most vulnerable times of their lives—either they have an illness or are homeless. Many of them just want someone to talk to. Whenever I finish talking with them, they always look so gratified that someone took the time to listen for a few minutes. And I walk away feeling pretty good, too.

Volunteering shouldn’t be something you do because it’s mandatory for school or looks good on your college brag sheet. Those are just perks.
Volunteering is about wanting to give and help someone else. Even if you are busy, you can make the time—especially now with the holidays approaching.

But this isn’t the only season to give your time. People need help year-round and there are plenty of opportunities to help them.
